You have the power to change social care in our society

Louise Skelly

This week, a long-awaited report called Power to People was published. You may have seen some coverage on the news and on social media about it. This really important report has the potential to reshape how we, as a society, care for vulnerable adults in our community.

The report was written by two independent experts, who spent considerable time talking to service users, carers and members of the public about their experience and aspirations for social care in Northern Ireland.

A lot of what people have told us in the past about domiciliary care (caring for people in their own home), access to respite care, the need for appropriate day opportunities, and better models of residential and nursing care is reflected in the report.

We welcome the opportunity this report gives people across Northern Ireland to be involved in changes that are long overdue.

Over the next few months, we will be promoting the involvement of the public in any decisions and service changes that are being made as a result of the findings in this report.

We will be out and about in your community to hear your views, and we will make sure that your views are listened to and included as the services develop.

This is such an important time and we want as many people as possible to get involved. We want to make the care that is provided to vulnerable people to be the best it can and we need your help to do that.
